what are we?

HIGH-ALTITUDE MEDICINE, RESEARCH AND EDUCATION ON LENIN PEAK, 7,134M, KYRGYZSTAN.

why we exist

At 7,134m, Lenin Peak sits on the border of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and carries a reputation as the “easiest” of the world’s 7000m giants. That reputation brings hundreds of climbers to its slopes every summer. But easy is a dangerous word on a mountain like this. Success rates sit below 25%, roughly fifteen serious incidents occur each season, and around a third of those are fatal.

In 2022, the mountain lost one of its own. Vyacheslav Sheiko – known to everyone as Slava Topol – had climbed Lenin Peak 26 times and was one of its most respected guides. His death was the catalyst for this project, and his name remains at the heart of what we do in tribute to the life he gave to this mountain and the community around it.

Despite Lenin Peak’s popularity, there has never been a dedicated medical service here for climbers, trekkers, guides, porters and the local community. Slava Mountain Medicine exists to close that gap – not only to treat what goes wrong, but to build the research, training and education that helps prevent it in the first place.
